I will be giving a lecture on 3d printing at Bradley University on Mon evening April 13th at the Robert Michael Student Center. please use this link for registration http://www.bradley.edu/academic/continue/public/printing/index.dot
3D Printing: What It Is, and How It Will Change Everything
3D printing – you’ve seen articles about it, but what is it and why are people so excited? This is a technology that has existed for two decades, but only recently has it become so inexpensive that it is widely available to entrepreneurs. 3D printing is the process of creating an object by adding thin layer after layer of material, which can be virtually anything (e.g. food, metal, plastic, human tissue), following a design created in a computer.
Join Bert Sanders, who will help us understand the technology, the trends, and the future impacts of this innovative technology that promises to change virtually everything over the next 10-20 years, including medicine, transportation, manufacturing, purchasing, art, housing, and more.
For those who would like to read about 3D printing in advance of the lecture, we suggest these articles: “You Won’t Believe These 30 Items Came From a 3D Printer” and “3D Printing: From racing cars to dresses to human tissue”

Ludum Dare is back this April! We’re going to be participating in the Ludum Dare Game Development Competition. Ludum Dare is an international ‘for fun’ game development competition that is run three times each year; April 2014’s competition had almost 2500 games submitted. We’ll be hosting a collab day on Saturday April 18th for everyone to participate. You must be at least 18 years old to attend, or must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration.
In a new twist this time around, we’re also going to have some teams working on creating board games in line with the video game development competition. So if programming doesn’t interest you, come give indie board games a try!
No experience is required, and teams are encouraged; we’ll have some experienced developers participating to help give pointers. It’s a great way to learn about programming, rapid design, development, and have a great time while doing it!
Cost is $10 for non-members, $5 for members, to cover facility costs and refreshments
Hope to see you there!
March is already here, and we have more great classes coming up this month!
Saturday, March 7th, Bert Sanders will be teaching a class on making fishing lures, including lead casting. The class will start at 11:00 and run until 2:00 or so.
Saturday, March 14th, we’ll be hosting a class on Beer Brewing, featuring an Irish Red, just in time for St Patrick’s day. The class will start at 11:00, and should wrap up between 3:00 and 4:00.
It’s still plenty cold outside, but we have some great events lined up this month!
Mold Making Class – Saturday February 21st
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Our resident professional costume designer, Alexandra Threw of PeachyKiki, will be giving a demo on mold making techniques, and how they are used in custom props. We’ll wrap up with a Q and A session.
Winter Expo – Saturday February 28th
9:00 am – 2:00 pm
If cabin fever is setting in, don’t worry! Come out to the MWTMC Winter Expo hosted by a number of our members and other local entrepreneurs. We’ll have local representatives from Norwex, Mary Kay, Stella & Dot, Pampered Chef, Discovery Toys, Thirty-One, Origami Owl, Arbonne, Plexus, and PeachyKiki. We’ll Also be providing tours of MWTMC, an intro to 3D Printing, and overviews of our classes.
Hope to see you there!
We’re going to be hosting an introductory class on making Wine and Cheese!. We’ll walk through the science and chemistry behind making Yogurt, Raspberry Wine, and a simple un-aged cheese called Paneer.
We’ll be starting at 11:00, and should finish up between 2:30 and 3:30. We should be able to sample the Yogurt and Paneer before we wrap up (the wine obviously has to ferment for a few months :). A light lunch will be provided.
If you’re planning to attend, just RSVP on the Facebook Event
Hope to see you there!
Thanks to everyone who came out to bake cookies and wrap presents Saturday! I think we ended up with 11 or 12 dozen cookies, and they all turned out great!
MWTMC is hosting a day of holiday activities on Saturday December 6th, starting at 11!
We’ll be baking and decorating holiday cookies, and will have some seasoned bakers on hand to show newbies the ropes (or teach everyone else some new tricks!) We will provide ingredients for making sugar cookies, chocolate chip and some other varieties, but feel free to bring your own cookie cutters and decorations to share if you’d like. Gluten free cookies will be made as well!
The cost of the workshop will be $5 for members, and $10 for non-members, to cover the cost of materials. Baking will start at 11:00 am, and will go until everyone wraps up.
Speaking of wrapping up, we’ll also have space for wrapping presents! We have lots of table space to make present wrapping a breeze this year. Plan on bringing presents you want to wrap, and paper, ribbons, bows, tags, etc to share with the group, that way we can all have more fun and variety under the tree this year. Lessons in wrapping will also be available so you can have neater and nicer looking presents. Plenty of tape will be provided.
Children are welcome and encouraged to participate in both baking, decorating, and present wrapping, with adult supervision.
Lunch and snacks will also be provided by MWTMC. Hope to see you there!
We have a busy October coming up with some great Events!
Saturday October 4th we’ll be hosting a beer brewing class at the Centre, as well as a board game day. One of our members will be demoing a game he’s been developing.
Saturday October 18th we’ll be attending the Heartland Maker Fest in Champaign, hosted by the Urbana Makerspace! We’ll have a table, and will be bringing the 3D printer and some homemade root beer to share.
Saturday October 25th we’ll be hosting a Halloween themed craft day, with pumpkin carving, baking, and some spooky 3D printing!
Take a look at the Event Calendar, Facebook, or Google+ for more details. Hope to see everyone there!
We printed a squirrel yesterday. Check out the video below. Current plans are that members of MWTMC can use the 3D printer as part of their membership. If you are interested in ordering a 3D printed part, contact us!
Actually, we printed 2!
We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who attended our Ludum Dare 30 meetup! Of course, we will be hosting Ludum Dare 31, so keep an eye out for that in the coming months.
Here is a timelapse video that we created of the meetup:
